CIVIC ELECTION TIME.

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

It must be time for a local civic election… I’ve photographed a bunch of the mayoral candidates over the past week or so….
Today I photographed mayoral hopeful Suzanne Anton in front of the Occupy Vancouver tent city.

Canopy executive director Nicole Rycroft holds a copy of Margaret Atwood’s new book, In Other Worlds: SF and the Human Imagination. The limited-edition book is printed on material made entirely of wheat straw, flax straw and recycled content. As the brainchild of Vancouver-based environmental group Canopy, the limited edition is designed to showcase the viability of wheat and flax straw as alternative sources of fibre for fine paper. SPIDER ROBINSON.

Monday, November 8th, 2010

For the Globe’s new One Big Idea this week, I photographed author Spider Robinson. Check out the discussion, which happens online today at 1pm, here: http://tgam.ca/BFG6

Author Spider Robinson’s One Big Idea to make Vancouver a better place is to make drugs available to anyone who wants them under controlled, safe conditions – and so clean up the city’s most troubled intersection, Main and Hastings.

JESSICA DUNKLEY.

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

A shot from a while ago which appeared in page A4 in today’s Globe & Mail. She was a very cool person to get a chance to meet and a true inspiration. The article is here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/skilled-interpreter-shortage-presents-hurdle-in-deaf-mds-quest-to-become-dermatologist/article1717651/

Jessica Dunkley is the first deaf, female Metis medical doctor in Canada. A skilled-interpreter shortage presents a hurdle in Dunkley’s quest to become dermatologist while doing her residency at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. Brett Beadle for the Globe and Mail.

AUTHOR RODDY DOYLE.

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

I photographed Irish author Roddy Doyle at the Irish Heather pub in Gastown last week for an article that appeared in today’s Globe and Mail. I have read a bunch of his books, which are mainly fiction stories from life in his native Dublin, where he still lives. Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, The Van, The Snapper, The Commitments (which was later made into a film) are all great reads, and worth checking out.

DR. DANIEL PAULY FOR L’EXPRESS MAGAZINE.

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I was hired last week by L’Express Magazine from France to take photos of UBC Professor Dr. Daniel Pauly. I was thinking of heading to the beach or an aquarium to shoot, as the client stated that was the look they were after. But time didn’t allow for that, so we shot in the board room close to Dr. Pauly’s office. The result was a nice, clean, photo with a background that speaks to Dr. Pauly’s fisheries background.

UBC Professor Dr. Daniel Pauly is arguably the world’s most prolific and widely cited living fisheries scientist.  Brett Beadle for L’Express Magazine.

RICK HANSEN – THE MAN IN MOTION

Friday, March 19th, 2010

I had about 3-4 minutes to take this picture, which is always the challenge when working for newspapers. But, having a small amount of time, and very few locations to chose from, I was pretty happy with what I got. I wanted a nice simple image a man who is considered to be a Canadian hero. He mentioned about trying to get me out sometime when he goes Sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River, (one of his other passions) and I really hope I can get the chance to do it.

Saturday marks the 25th anniversary of the start of the Man in Motion World Tour, where Rick Hansen wheeled more than 24, 000 miles across 24 countries. Brett Beadle for The Globe and Mail

POPCAP CFO JASON KAPALKA

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

A few weeks ago I was assigned to go photograph Jason Kapalka in Comox, BC for Game Informer Magazine out of the States. Jason lives in Comox, and commutes to the PopCap offices in Seattle about once a month. What an awesome spot, I hadn’t been to Comox in ages, and although it was a wet, windy and gross day, we made the best of it. And to top it off, there were CF-18′s taking off from nearby CFB Comox, providing air support for the Olympics. The howling winds continually knocked my lightstand over, so Jason ran into the house and got some tape for me to rig up my softbox to withstand the blow. The magazine was very happy with it, as I was told most of the portraits they get are dudes in their computer game offices. Nothing like a little bit of West Coast scenery to make a picture work…..

NATHALIE LE PROHON.

Friday, March 12th, 2010

I shot some portraits of Nathalie at the Vancouver Library in downtown Vancouver a couple of weeks ago for the Globe and Mail. Nathalie was in town for the Olympics and was staying at The Westin Grand hotel on Robson, so we went across the street to the Vancouver Public Library.  Being one of the more interesting buildings in Vancouver, I figured the architecture would give me a great background to shoot her in.  She was a great photo subject, and I think the VPL gave me a great environment to get some nice, clean images for the story.
