SPIDER ROBINSON.

Monday, November 8th, 2010

For the Globe’s new One Big Idea this week, I photographed author Spider Robinson. Check out the discussion, which happens online today at 1pm, here: http://tgam.ca/BFG6

Author Spider Robinson’s One Big Idea to make Vancouver a better place is to make drugs available to anyone who wants them under controlled, safe conditions – and so clean up the city’s most troubled intersection, Main and Hastings.

JESSICA DUNKLEY.

A shot from a while ago which appeared in page A4 in today’s Globe & Mail. She was a very cool person to get a chance to meet and a true inspiration. The article is here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/skilled-interpreter-shortage-presents-hurdle-in-deaf-mds-quest-to-become-dermatologist/article1717651/

Jessica Dunkley is the first deaf, female Metis medical doctor in Canada. A skilled-interpreter shortage presents a hurdle in Dunkley’s quest to become dermatologist while doing her residency at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. Brett Beadle for the Globe and Mail.

DOLHPINS & WHALES, OH MY.

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Took a trip to the Aquarium yesterday to photograph the whales and dolphins for the front of the Globe’s BC section.  I am kind of stuck on the issue, I don’t think those tanks are any place for these amazing animals but I guess a lot of them have been born in captivity and couldn’t survive in the wild.  Still, it’s kind of heartbreaking to see them in there. Coincidentally, I was just reading this article: http://outside.away.com/outside/culture/201007/killer-whale-behavior-trainer-death-seaworld.html in Outside magazine (I usually read it every month.)  It’s worth a read, and outlines a lot of what has happened with killer whales in aquariums.  Sad stuff.

July 19, 2010 -  Vancouver, BC – Visitors watch as a Pacific white-sided dolphin swims at the Vancouver Aquarium on Monday.  Vancouver’s park commissioners voted Monday night to reject a motion urging a non-binding plebiscite concerning the whale and dolphin exhibits at the city’s aquarium for next year’s civic election.
